Default Multifunctional service in UAE

On another forum, there was a point raised that Al Ain Approach service was provided by Abu Dhabi area controllers.

The question from me is, can an area controller hold an approach rating. I would think YES, but as the introduction was rapid, just how can a formal training course be established, approved and then implemented.

Hi and welcome to the forums

Yes it was a rapid transition which raised many questions but as far as I know, there are a couple of area controllers from UAE Centre which previously also held approach ratings. These ATC's which had the licence previously were selected and trained on the specific airspace in question.

Doesnt matter what they are called. Watch these okes work and it is easy to see they are still area controllers, not approach controllers.
